Lwandle Hostel

Lwandle Hostel

Lwandle Hostel 33 has been preserved to represent the migrant labour hostel encampment that it formed part of the original encampment constructed in the late 1950s, between The Strand and Somerset West, Cape Town. The approach to the building renovations were to minimize the repairs to the structure externally restoring the basic exterior including the bucket toilet system.

Interiors were carefully recorded and the curatorial team obtained and retained furnishings including keeping the physical partitions to represent the chronology of the different layers of occupancy through the years as the spaces moved from single men’s dorms to family homes. Old photographic records, oral history and detailed investigations of the structure through much debate guided these interventions.
