Xaanfuun tsunami resettlement project

Xaanfuun, an old Italian naval base on the horn of Africa, was severely affected by the 2004 Tsunami with its entire population of more than 250 families displaced and without water. This project sought to resettle the town on a less ecologically sensitive site on higher ground. The brief was initially to restore the existing settlement which was weighed against ecological sensitivities, appropriateness of the solution and people’s fear of being subjected to another tsunami.
