Kammiesberg Farm Renovation & Visitors facilities

The Farm is located 20km outside of Garies in the Northern Cape. The area is a declared Biosphere in the Kammiesberg due to the unique biome and climate of the Roodeberg Mountain being the highest in the Kammiesberg region. Developed by the Department of Environmental Affairs, and owned by the Local municipality the current farm hosts local tenant farmers and visitors to this unique environment.

The project involves renovating the existing clay brick buildings and adding additional accommodation for the tenant farmers and visitors. A feature of the project was to employ and do skills development training with local unemployed inhabitants of the area in line with the aspirations of the National Expanded Public Works Program. In addition the buildings have been developed using very simple and durable environmentally conscious building materials and methods, which include passive design strategies, on-site manufacturing of adobe brick, waterless toilet systems and solar hot water heaters.
